Global Action
Costa Rica
In Summer 2025, I led a trip for Global Action with children from a school in Reading for Global Action. The group of students, teachers, our guide and myself travelled to three remarkable and distinct locations along the west of Costa Rica. We explored the mountains of Monteverde, the turtle conservation project at Cirenas and the permaculture projects at Santa Teresa. Along the way, I documented their journey to show the amazing work that the group did and to, hopefully, inspire future students to explore for themselves.
Global Action operate with an ‘in-country’ partner in every country. This partner’s role is usually to help guide the team with the schedule and to ensure that everything from an operational standpoint is run smoothly; offering local knowledge and experience. For Costa Rica, this in-country company is Jakera: a family run business with ethical tourism at its heart.
The first location that the group stayed in was the cloud forest of Monteverde; a location with some of the highest biodiversity on the planet. Panoramic views, conservation projects and environmental education made this my personal favourite place on the trip!
Student experiences are what it’s all about and hearing from them about what they enjoyed about the trip was a very special moment for me as a Leader. I was fortunate to have worked with a charming and fun group of teenagers who squeezed as much as they could out of their trip and enjoyed it all the more as a result!
Cirenas is a turtle conservation project which Global Action have been supporting for a number of years. Teams of volunteers will head out along the beaches each night in search of turtle nests to protect them from poachers.
